52 Frames week 3: leading lines . . .
“ A lonely moorland road at dusk ”
For this week’s theme, I chose to combine several aspects of a road: the road itself, the white central road markings, fence and telegraph lines as well as light trails of vehicles.
I had an idea after driving along this moorland road a few days ago, so I revisited a particular spot just before sunrise, where it continues in a slight uphill curve. As I thought light trails might be an obvious choice, I’ve combined multiple images in Photoshop with the aim of creating an otherworldy look and enhancing the bleakness of the moors. Also, at such an early time on a Saturday morning, this is a pretty quiet road, so my shots mostly only featured one light trail. I wanted both white headlights and red tail lights in the final image so by combining six shots, the light trails become more accentuated.

An opposing view . . .
This relates to yesterday’s images, taken from the other side of the reservoir and shot in the opposite direction. I was a little disappointed that there weren’t a few clouds in the sky, until I looked behind and saw all the action was taking place over my shoulder. Hence why I rushed as fast as I could (in icy conditions 😬) to the far side of the reservoir to take the photos featured in my previous post. I still quite like this view though.

Exactly two weeks ago, I was out in the snow taking these shots. The snow was coming to an end as warmer temperatures had been forecast, but I wanted to make the most of what was still around.

Waterfall study . . .
This is a multiple exposure image combining shots taken with different exposure times. I’m trying to convey the sheer power of water that was gushing through a weir in a local brook after all the new year rain. I hope you think it works!

On the boardwalk . . .
On the first day of our recent snowfall, I headed out for a walk via a local fishing lake (or “lodge” in local parlance). I like the way the walkway snakes around the water’s edge, creating a border between the trees and their reflections.

52 Frames week 2: what I eat . . .
Mushroom risotto - deconstructed. Well, food and still-life are genres I’m getting to grips with, along with using my home studio set-up. But, I was quite pleased with this theme, as I’ve had the idea to shoot mushroom risotto ingredients for a while now.
As I submitted it yesterday, I felt there were still things that I’d like to change. For instance, the alignment of the ingredients, arguably I’ve missed some out - white wine, butter, oil, seasonings, the list goes on, and maybe a small portion of the finished dish. Plus, I’m sure there’s more I could have done with my studio lighting or editing to make the image more interesting, so please do let me know what you think!

Snowy moors and masts . . .
I take any opportunity I can to post a shot of Winter Hill, my favourite local landmark and I loved the distant view of the masts set against the blurry blue/white winter landscape. We’ve had the snowiest weather I’ve seen since moving here, around 10 years ago, so I’ve been trying to make the most of this wonderful snowy transformation of the moors. This was taken during the week on a walk with my brother David, where we were almost waist deep in snow on the top of Daren moor. Difficult walking at times, but a great day to be out!

Yesterday I posted an abstract multiple exposure shot combining two images of the colonnades at Walton in the Naze. So, for today, I thought I’d show the colonnade with more simple single exposure shots. The series shows the changing colours of the lights illuminating this elegant seaside structure.

Abstract exhibit . . .
I’m delighted to have one of my photos exhibited in one the current exhibitions at the Glasgow Gallery of Photography. I submitted this image to their Abstract-themed Open Call. It’s a multiple exposure nighttime shot of the colonnade at Walton on the Naze with the pier in the background. The colonnade is illuminated by a repeating cycle of different coloured light, which gives the images these contrasting tones.
A good reason to plan a trip Glasgow!

52 Frames week 1: self-portrait . . .
I’ve decided to join in the 52 Frames challenge, to stretch myself and improve my photography. Week 1’s theme was a bit like being thrown into the deep-end for me as, like many photographers, I’m much more comfortable behind the lens. The idea was to convery something about yourself in the image, so a shot of me pouring over maps doing some route planning was an obvious choice for my submission!

One of the advantages of walking up a low-ish hill in the Lakes is finding trees at the summit. Despite looking quite ravaged by the weather, I thought these trees still held a sculptural presence in the Borrowdale landscape.
