Hearts in nature . . .
I usually post an image with a heart-shaped theme on Valentine’s Day and almost thought I hadn’t anything suitable to post this year, until I flicked through shots I took last Saturday on a walk through the grounds of Lytham Hall. I love the green detail on snowdrop petals, which I always think resemble a heart shape. So problem solved, rather than a single rose, a single snowdrop - happy Valentine’s Day!
And, given the Latin name for the flower is galanthus, maybe the snowdrop should be the symbolic flower for Galentines Day . . .

Occupying an elevated position, Glasgow‘s gothic-style necropolis is a fascinating place to spend an hour or so. Its memorials to some of the city’s former residents is stunning in itself, but the views across the city are well worth the walk to the top. This is a composite view over Glasgow from the city’s Necropolis to the east of the city. I’m not sure what sort of factory I was looking at, but I liked the atmospheric contrast of the industry with city rooftops.

The Buff . . .
Referring back to yesterday’s post, I had actually taken a shot of reflections in puddles during my trip to Glasgow, but sadly, from a timing perspective, my photo didn’t quality for the weekly challenge. But I do like this shot. It’s an entrance to a club called The Buff on a quiet side street near to Glasgow’s busy Sauchiehall Street.

52 Frames week 6: Puddle! . . .
“ Fountain ”
Well, puddles seem to have eluded me this week. I went for a walk on Saturday hoping to find some but instead I photographed this ornamental lake and fountain as it at least gave me an opportunity to meet the extra challenge (shutter speed of 1/4000 second) and capture water droplets. This is a multiple exposure of 4 images, to create an impressionistic style with the water droplets.
It feels as though the I’ve not really complied with the theme, but on the other hand, I could say I’ve interpreted the idea of a puddle.

GoMA at night . . .
In a city with so much stunning architecture, one of my favourite buildings is the Gallery of Modern Art. It’s quite prominent in the city, being situated in Royal Exchange Square and at the head of a busy thoroughfare, but that also makes it tricky to get a clear shot of the elaborate neoclassical front façade. So, I decided to try some night shots. I particularly like the mirrored mosaic pediment above the Corinthian pillars by artist Niki de Saint Phalle and am pleased this aspect of the building is shown in this shot, as well as the traffic cone topped statue of the Duke of Wellington in silhouette!

Its real name is Bell’s Bridge after the whisky company, but its construction, which had to avoid a straight line crossing of the River Clyde, led to it being nicknamed the Squinty Bridge.

One building I was keen to photograph during my visit to Glasgow was the so-called Armadillo. On a redeveloped area of the Clyde, it’s a striking building. This image is a composite of several shots, to highlight the recurring arches in the design. I like the row of bicycles tethered near to the entrance.

Translucent glow . . .
Glasgow certainly stuns with its architecture, both classic and modern. This is the spectral Hydro arena, taken as we headed into a rather dull sunset, so I’ve blended two different shots to create a multiple exposure and highlight the intensity of the illuminated translucent “cushions”.

52 Frames week 4: Blue . . .
“ Blue and Orange Ornaments ”
This week’s theme of blue had the added challenge of incorporating a contrasting colour. So, I decided I wanted to create a very blue image with just a splash of orange using an arrangements of treasures that I have displayed in my house. I bought some blue card for the backdrop and base, which creates a soft blue around the objects. Creating a still-life images with my home studio set-up is very much a learning process for me, but that’s what 52 Frames is all about, so I’m pleased it’s stretching me out of my comfort zone.

Just a short trip to Glasgow, but with an overnight planned in, I headed to the riverside for some night shots. I love the combination of the modern Clyde Arc Bridge alongside the dark shadow of the Finnieston Crane, one of the last remaining Titan cranes on the river.
